- Provide a safe secure environment where the puppy can go to have some quiet time, for example a crate or a different room. This can help if the puppy gets over excited and needs to take some time out to calm down. Use the safe space/quiet time if the puppy starts to bite, pull on clothing, jumping up or barking and not calming down.
- Direct your puppy’s energy to an activity that is fun and safe for everyone to enjoy, for example a walk, dog puzzles or games to play.
- It is important to remain calm when your puppy is excited, keep a slow and even tone voice to help calm your puppy down.
- If there is a pattern to the excitable behaviour, if possible, try to distract them with a game or activity to keep their mind calm and stop them from becoming over excited before the excited behaviour starts.
- Make sure your puppy is getting enough rest/sleep throughout the day. They need to sleep 18-20 hours a day, otherwise they become overtired and overexcited and struggle to calm themselves down.
